Gov. Rick Perry of Texas has said that there is no way for Pres. Obama to be Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces as he has never served in any of the branches of our troops. Of course he says this because he personally has served, and therefore pushing one of his individual assets, as he sees it. But, there is some interesting information about the past presidents of our country who have also not served in our armed forces, but distinguished themselves as Commander in Chief (aside from Barack Obama). The following did not serve:John Adams-But served as chairman of the Continental Congress Board of War.
John Quincy Adams-Witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill (Michelle Bachman thinks that is in NH)
Martin Van Buren
Grover Cleveland
William Howard Taft-Sect of War 1904-1908
Woodrow Wilson-Pres. During WWI
Warren G. Harding
Calvin Coolidge
Herbert Hoover
Franklin D. Roosevelt-But was Asst. Sec. of Navy during WWI
Bill Clinton
Then there are those with barely questionable service:James Madison-Colonel Virginia Militia-Did not see action
James J. Polk-Colonel Tennessee Militia-Did not see action
Abraham Lincoln-Captain Illinois Militia-Did not see action
Ronald Regan-Captain USAR-Did not see action-made army movies
George W. Bush-Fst. Lt Texas Air Nation Guard-Stateside service during Vietnam War (when he showed up)
Then there are big shot government peopleRichard Cheney-VP of USA-several deferments-“had other priorities”
John Ashcroft-Former Atty. Gen.-seven deferments to teach business education at SW Missouri State
Jeb Bush-Former Florida Governor-Did not serve
Karl Rove-avoided draft-did not serve
Newt Gingrich-Former Speaker of House-avoided draft-did not serve
So it would seem that Rick Perry is way out of line and too impressed with his own service.
